Nanyojo Angie & Nayonga Paulina
For sisters Nanyojo Angie and Nayonga Paulina, home has rarely been a place of safety or predictability. While most children wake up to the comfort of a parent's care, these two young girls wake up to a world of profound uncertainty.
Their mother struggles with severe mental health challenges, leaving her often unable to care for herself, let alone her daughters. On the days when her illness takes over, the girls are left to navigate the day entirely on their own. Their father, consumed by severe alcoholism, is a ghost in their lives—bringing chaos and fear rather than the protection and provision a father should provide. In a home heavily shadowed by illness and addiction, Angie and Paulina have had to grow up far too fast, relying exclusively on one another for comfort, warmth, and survival.
Yet, in the midst of this heavy environment, the bond between the sisters is a quiet, unbroken light. They share whatever small amounts of food they can find, protect each other when their surroundings become unpredictable, and fiercely hold onto the hope of a life where they don't have to carry the burdens of the adults around them.
